2008-09 Season - Vikings drop 81-71 contest to Loras in overtime

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana women’s basketball dropped a hard fought contest in its home opener, falling 81-71 to Loras in overtime on Tuesday, November 18 in Rock Island, Illinois.  The Vikings fall to 1-2 overall.

The game was close for much of the first half with Loras grabbing its biggest edge 15-9 at the 12:45 mark.  Augustana clawed back, taking its first lead of the night 18-17 on a jumper by freshman Natalie Runge (St. Dominic HS, O’Fallon, Mo.).  The Duhawks reclaimed the advantage 21-20 at the 7:09 mark on a jumper by Mindy Meyer and held the lead for the rest of the half, finishing with a 30-26 edge heading into the locker room.

The visitors opened the second half on a 7-4 spurt to open up a seven point lead, the biggest of the night up to that point, but then the Vikings went to work.  Augustana responded with its best stretch of the night, outscoring the Duhawks 21-3 over the next seven minutes to grab a double digit lead at 51-40 with 10:02 remaining.  The Blue & Gold spread the wealth with seven different players scoring during the run, capped by a jumper from sophomore Jeanelle Strohmaier (Genoa-Kingston HS, Genoa, Ill.).

Augustana tried to withstand a furious rally by Loras, but the Duhawks eventually tied the game at 61-61 with 1:50 to play on another basket by Meyer.  Loras took its first lead of the second half on a jumper by Sarah Pillon with 1:03 to play, but a key basket by senior Sarah Rachwalski (Amos Alonzo Stagg HS, Palos Hills, Ill.) tied the game for the final time in regulation at 63-63 with 37 seconds remaining.  Loras had a pair of free throw attempts with two seconds left, but misfired on both shots and the game went to overtime.

Loras grabbed the quick lead in the extra session, scoring on its first two possessions to jump out to a 68-63 advantage.  Junior Kristen Fox (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) hit a three point basket to cut the deficit to 68-66, but Augustana could get no closer as a pair of three point baskets by Duhawk leading scorer Lindsay Bava sealed the game for Loras.

Fox led the way for the Vikings with 19 points.  Runge finished with a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.  Freshman Kristina Howard (Cherokee Trail HS, Aurora, Colo.) was also a presence on the glass, snaring 10 boards.

Bava scored a game high 25 points for the Duhawks.  Meyer was in double figures with 18 points and Alex Hudson added 16 points.
