2008-09 Season - Augustana women's tennis team drops 9-0 decision to Carthage

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Sophomore Tricia Sapio (Barrington HS, Hoffman Estates, Ill.) played some of her best tennis of the season in her first set of singles against Carthage, but dropped a hard fought match in a third set super-tiebreaker.  Sapio was the lone Viking to win a set on the day as the Vikings dropped a 9-0 decision to the visitors from Kenosha on Friday, October 3 in Rock Island, Illinois.  Augustana falls to 5-8 overall and 2-3 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

Sapio and junior Emily Doemland (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) battled at number one doubles, but lost (8-4) to Gina Klein and Taylor Gustafson.  Junior Jenna Richardson (Melrose Park Walther Lutheran HS, Bellwood, Ill.) and senior Alli Bernardi (Rockford Lutheran HS, Belvidere, Ill.) fell by the same score to Beth Kaufman and Emily Murphy at second doubles.

Sapio put together the best showing in singles for Augustana, winning 6-2 in the first set before falling (2-6, 6-1, (10-5)) to Katie Hornick at fourth singles.  Freshman Brittany Reece (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) also pushed Murphy at number five singles, dropping a (7-6 (8), 6-2) decision.

The Vikings are back in action tomorrow for the final two home matches of the fall season.  Augustana will face Elmhurst to complete its CCIW schedule and also play Loras.
