2008-2009 Season - Rachel Gahn shoots 74 on second day and finishes tied for third as Viking golfers place fourth at St. Ambrose Classic

Davenport, Iowa – Senior Rachel Gahn (Edina HS, Edina, Minn.) was the top scorer for the Viking women’s golf team yet again, finishing tied for third at the St. Ambrose Classic on Saturday, September 20 and Sunday, September 21 in Davenport, Iowa.  Gahn shot an 85 on the first day before firing a 74 to finish the tournament with a score of 159.  Her round of 74 was the top individual round of the two day event.  The opening round of play was at Glynns Creek Golf Course while the second round took place at Emeis Golf Course.

The Vikings concluded the two day event with a team score of 696 (345 351).  Senior Heather Arizpe (Conant HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) was second for Augustana with a two day score of 170 (81 89).  Freshman Brittany Carr (Lincoln Way East HS, Frankfort, Ill.) was close behind with a total of 172 (84 88).  Sophomore Jessica Berens (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) rounded out the team scoring with a total of 195 (95 100).

Four other Vikings also competed at the event.  Junior Katherine Mascheri (Hersey HS, Mount Prospect, Ill.) shot a 196 (95 101) and junior Elizabeth Scarlata (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) finished with a 198 (97 101).  Sophomore Courtney VandeWiele (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) completed the two day tournament with a score of 205 (97 108) and senior Shasta Ketcham (Danville HS, Danville, Iowa) shot a 228 (118 110).

St. Ambrose earned the team crown with a two day total of 658 (324 334), finishing just one stroke ahead of Waldorf, who took second with a score of 659 (326 333).  St. Ambrose’s second squad finished third at 693 (336 357), narrowly ahead of Augustana, who was fourth at 696 (345 351).  St. Francis (705; 353 352), Coe (726; 355 371), Grinnell (736; 370 366), Mount Mercy (756; 374 382), Clarke (766; 376 390), Monmouth (769; 385 384), Grand View (771; 386 385), Iowa Wesleyan (793; 392 401), and William Penn (794; 384 410) rounded out the 13 team field.  

Waldorf’s Valeria Cogollo grabbed medalist honors with a two day total of 157 (79 + 78).  Kelly Jansen of St. Ambrose was second at 158 (80 +78).  Gahn finished tied for third with Vicky McGowan of St. Francis at 159 (80 + 79).

Augustana will compete at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships on Friday, October 3 and Saturday, October 4 at the Springbrook Golf Course in Naperville, Illinois.
