2008-09 Season - Vikings drop 5-4 heartbreaker to St. Ambrose in women's tennis

Davenport, Iowa – The Augustana women’s tennis team turned in a great performance on Thursday, September 18 against St. Ambrose in Davenport, Iowa, but ultimately ended up on the wrong side of a 5-4 score against the Queen Bees.  The Vikings are now 5-5 overall this season and remain 2-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

Augustana jumped to the early lead in doubles, earning victories in the second and third spots to grab a 2-1 edge heading into singles play.  Sophomore Justine Stukas (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and freshman Julie Wach (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) scored the first point of the match, defeating Maurita Flo and Emily Anderson (8-4).  St. Ambrose tied the match with an (8-4) win of its own at number one doubles where junior Emily Doemland (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) and sophomore Tricia Sapio (Barrington HS, Hoffman Estates, Ill.) fell to Amanda Gomez and Rachel Sarafin.  With the match deadlocked at 1-1, junior Jenna Richardson (Melrose Park Walther Lutheran HS, Bellwood, Ill.) and freshman Brittany Reece (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) scored an impressive (8-5) win over St. Ambrose’s Jenelle Bayer and Adrianne Foley at second doubles to put Augustana back in front.

The Queen Bees tied the match again with a (6-3, 6-2) victory at number one singles by Gomez over Richardson and momentarily took the lead when Foley defeated Stukas (6-4, 6-3) at the fifth spot.  Doemland came through with a clutch performance for Augustana, rallying from a one set deficit to defeat Sarafin (1-6, 6-2, (10-7)) at number two singles to even the match at 3-3.  The Vikings took the lead for the final time when Sapio pulled out a (6-4, 6-3) win at third singles against Danielle Jessee.  Reece was forced to retire in the second set due to an ankle injury as St. Ambrose’s Bayer tied the match with a (7-6 (2), 4-2, injury – retire) win.  The final match of the day came down to number six singles where Augustana freshman Alyssa Quitschau (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) and Flo battled back and forth for almost two hours before Flo earned a hard fought (7-6 (9), 7-5) victory to clinch the 5-4 win for the Queen Bees.
