Augustana partners with MetroLINK to reduce environmental footprint

Rock Island, Ill. -Augustana students, faculty and staff will welcome a compressed natural gas bus onto campus Tuesday, September 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to celebrate a full access agreement to all MetroLINK bus routes in the Illinois Quad Cities. The open bus tour near the Thomas Tredway Library marks the beginning of the new seven-day service that is an expansion of a District route started early this year that drew more than 5,000 riders over three months.

The Augustana College community can catch as many as five different routes around campus throughout the day and night by showing an Augustana ID. Psychology Professor Mark Vincent uses the bus daily. "I've been riding the bus to work for a little more than a year now, and I've found the MetroLINK system to be both efficient and a pleasure to use. Using public transportation is a meaningful step that each of us can take to reduce fuel consumption, help the environment by reducing carbon emissions, and save money in the process. This is a 'win-win' proposition for our community and MetroLINK."

The one-year agreement builds on a goal to get every member of Augustana College to consume less energy. "This agreement with MetroLINK notes the effectiveness of our efforts in making Augustana a more sustainable community," says President Steve Bahls. "And we are dependent on each and every member of the campus community and the choices they make." Augustana also hopes to expand the service into the cities of Davenport and Bettendorf.

MetroLINK employees will be available to answer questions about the new service for the media from 11am to noon.
