I served as a professor in the Biology Department at Augustana from 1975 until 2018, and I served as a faculty member in the Asian Studies Program since 1989. I earned the B.A. in Biology from North Central College in 1971, and the Ph.D. in Physiology with an Anatomy minor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1975, joining the Augustana faculty at the ripe old age of 24.

My Primary Role as a Teacher

While my teaching philosophy was multi-faceted, the poem below sums it up best. I loved what I did, and I loved the students I taught. I always wanted the students in my classes to succeed, both inside and outside the classroom. I was concerned about them as students, and as people.

I am a teacher. A teacher is someone who leads. There is no magic here. I do not walk on water, I do not part the sea. I just love my students.
