History Club Alumni Panel Discussion - "What can you do with a history degree?" The History Club invited Augustana College alumni who graduated with history degrees to return to Augustana and discuss with current students what one can do with a history degree. The discussion covered how the alumni used their Augustana education and historical knowledge in their lives and careers. Panel members included teachers at all levels of education, lawyers, the Wyoming State Archivist, the Mayor of Rock Island, and others.
History Club Trip to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfield, IL- After touring the Lincoln Museum, the History Club also visited the Old State Capital building, and the Lincoln Tomb in Springfield. Afterwards, a club member's family generously provided dinner at their home for all those on the trip.
Meeting with Ted Wachholz of the Eastland Disaster Historical Society - History Club members met with Mr. Wachholz to discuss participating in the the Eastland Disaster Historical Society's Chicago Marathon fundraiser.
Oral History Project - Local radio station WVIK partnered with the Davenport Public Library to interview World War II veterans, so History Club members met with Dr. Arthur Pitz to discuss participation in this oral history project.
"Life After College" Panel Discussion - Similarly to the History Club's earlier "Alumni Panel Discussion," we sponsored a panel discussion of life after college. The History Club especially welcomed students worrying about where and how to apply for graduate school, those looking for work outside of the United States, and students interested in other career paths with a degree in history or a related discipline. The panel members included '07 Augustana graduate Danielle VanMeenen, who currently teaches middle school social studies; Sarah Horowitz, archivist/Special Collections librarian, Dr. Stephen Warren, Augustana History professor, and Kim Tunnicliff, Augustana's Director of International Programs.
RIBCO History Trivia Night - The History Club hosted a History Trivia Night at the Rock Island Brewing Company (RIBCO) on Monday, April 14th, 2008. We took advantage of their Burger Basket deal that night (a burger and fries for $1.75 with the purchase of any drink) and played Trivial Pursuit using only the history questions.
