Frequently Asked Questions

How much will it cost me to go through Recruitment and/or to join a group?

The Recruitment Fee is $30, which is to be paid when you sign up for the Recruitment process. This fee goes towards transportation to all locations, food, and the venues.

“Dues” for being part of a chapter depends on which chapter you join. Dues typically range from $250-$350 for the year. Each chapter willingly works to make this fee bearable and payment plans are often available to accommodate members. These dues go towards social events, service projects (like Relay), formals, Recruitment, and more.

How much time during the week does the New Member Period (NMP) take?

The New Member Period lasts for 5 weeks (beginning on the first day of Spring term). The hours are as follows:

            Monday – Thursday8-10:30pm

            Friday - Saturday7:00-12:00 midnight

            Sunday: no hours

No New Member activities are allowed to happen outside of these hours.

What is the time commitment for being in a Greek Group?

Time commitment depends on you. Taking a role in your chapter, such as being on Exec Board, will obviously take more time than taking no role. However, each chapter has weekly meetings that last around 1 hour and occasional mandatory events or service projects each term.

Is there drama within Greek Groups or between different chapters?

As a whole, there are no major conflicts between certain groups. Greek Life as a whole acts as a united community and there are friendships that span all chapters. Conflicts may arise between members on an individual level, but that is to be expected in any large group. “Drama” is no more prevalent in Greek Life than anywhere else.

Are Greeks all about partying? Will my GPA drop once I join a group?

Absolutely not. Greek council holds weekly tutoring sessions and recruits tutors from each chapter. Many chapters also utilize “Academic Bigs” during the NMP who are there to help you study and maintain your grades. While social events are fun, they are not what Greek Life is about.

I’ve heard that Greek Life is not very diverse... will I be discriminated against or left out because of this?

It is a myth that Greek chapters are not diverse, at least at Augustana. Each chapter contains members from different backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, sexualities, and more. For example, the percentage of multi-cultural students in Greek Life (19.54%) is higher than the percentage of multi-cultural students total at Augie (19.41%). Greek Life encourages diversity among all chapters.

If I don’t drink, will I fit in? I’ve heard parties are dangerous!

Not drinking is not a problem! There are many members who join a group who commit to staying sober until 21 or for life (remember... Greek Life as a whole does not promote underage drinking). Social events are rarely ever dangerous; at all parties or social events, groups will have “Sober Sisters” or “Sober Brothers” who promise to be available in case of an emergency. Also, each group is required to go through Sexual Assault awareness and prevention training in order to maintain a safe and comfortable environment.
