The original letters were found among the possessions of Louise Stephenson of White Plains, New York, by her cousin Marie MacIntosh of Burlington, Iowa. The letter were sent to Dr. Emeroy Johnson at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota for translation.

Biographical note

Mathilda Cassel was the daughter of Peter Cassel, founder of New Sweden, Iowa. She was born on January 27, 1834, in Kisa, Östergötland, and immigrated to New Sweden in 1845. She married John Peterson, who died shortly after returning from the Civil War. She subsequently married F.O. Danielsson.

Content note

The collection consists of photocopies of typescript manuscript prepared by Earl Check of Madrid, Iowa, entitled "Civil War Letters to New Sweden, Iowa." The letters were written by a variety of soldiers, incl. F.O. Danielson to his sister and parents and C.J. Peterson to his wife Mathilda. The letters are of a personal nature, but also describe the conditions the soldiers had to endure.
