The papers of Rev. Arthur Wilhelm Knock were given to the SSIRC by his niece, Aina Abrahamson of California Lutheran College, Thousand Oaks, California. The papers include an autobiography written in 1968 and accounts book for the years 1938-1954. The collection was processed in February, 1983, by Jean Pohlhammer.

Biographical Sketch

Rev. Arthur Wilhelm Knock was born October 13, 1885, in Gowrie, Iowa. His parents immigrated from Värmland, Sweden to America in 1872. Knock began preaching in the summers after graduating from high school in 1908. He graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter in 1912, and taught at North Star College in Warren, Minnesota for one year. In the fall of 1913, he entered the Augustana Seminary and during the summers he preached in Manitoba (Canada), Wyoming, and Minnesota. He graduated from Augustana Seminary with a B.D. degree in 1916 and was ordained in Galesburg, Illinois on June 11, 1916. During the summer of 1916, he also married Florence Abrahamson. The first call came from the Lutheran church in Forest Lake, Minnesota. In 1921, Knock went to Bethany Church in Berkeley, California where he stayed for 4 years. In 1924, he moved back to Minnesota and served the First Lutheran Church of St. Paul until 1931. Between 1931 and 1944, he taught at the Lutheran Bible Institute. He served as pastor for the Benton Lutheran Church in Crooks, South Dakota between 1944 -1946. In 1946, he returned to Minnesota and served Bethany Lutheran Church, Minneapolis until he retired in 1950.

Rev. Knock was also carpenter and a writer. During his lifetime he worked on several parsonages and churches and finally he built his own home. His writing included many bible study guides and a text book. He had two children, Carl Gustaf Knock and Anna Louise (Lindquist). Arthur W. Knock died on May 20, 1969, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
