## Caterpillar Counting

It was another station day taking place in Mrs. Carmack’s room. As always, the students were excited to see what was in store for them. Today, at my station, the students would be working with the numbers 1-20. More specifically, the students would be playing the “Caterpillar Game.” The purpose of the game was to see who could fill in all of the spaces on the caterpillar first. In order to do this, the students drew a number card and then used their crayon to color in the same corresponding number of spaces on the caterpillar. For example, if I picked a 4, I would color the next 4 spaces with my crayon. The students took turns drawing numbers. While observing this game, I noticed that some of the students are still having difficulty recognizing two digit numbers and reading them backwards. For instance, if the number is 12, the student will think the number is 21. There were quite a few of these cases in today’s activity. Besides this problem, the students seemed to enjoy this station because it was a race to see who could finish first. Students were excited for their peers when they would pull a high number, but unfortunately, we did have some poor sportsmanship as all of our kindergarteners wanting to be winners. For the most part though, this was a smooth activity that I think the kindergarteners would look forward to playing again.
