Rindone paces trio of All-America finishes at nationals

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — One one-hundredth of a second was all that separated Augustana senior Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) and an NCAA Division III indoor national championship in the 400 meters Saturday. Classmate Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) finished eighth in the same event, joining Rindone in earning All-America status. Both also ran on the Augustana 1,600 relay which garnered an eighth-place finish as well.

In the 400, Rindone made up considerable ground on the second of two laps, but crossed the finish line a scant .01 behind Aric Hoeschen of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. Hoeschen, tumbled across the line with a winning time of 48.20, while Rindone's 48.21 set a new school record for the second day in a row. Rindone finished Friday's preliminaries in a then-school record 48.46. Patton, running in section one, finished in 50.48 to claim eighth place.

Less than two hours later, both Rindone and Patton competed, along with sophomores Keith Cline (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) and David Voland(Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.), in the 1,600 relay. That quartet finished in 3:18.06 to achieve All-America status as well. Augustana finished tied for 14th in the team standings with 10 points. UW-LaCrosse won the team title with 74 points.
