Information on the 2010 Publication: The Olson-Brandelle North American Indian Art Collection of Augustana College

From prehistoric pots to Nampeyo and Jody Folwell, this 318-piece collection focuses on Southwest Pueblo ceramics. Kent Olson '61 and his wife, Elaine, donated the Olson-Brandelle North American Indian Art Collection to Augustana College in 2004, with subsequent additions.

This 336-page catalog has entries written by, among others, Duane Anderson, Karen Barrie, Bruce Bernstein, Jill Leslie Furst, Francis Harlow, Kent Olson, Simon Ortiz, Barton Wright, Augustana faculty and administrators, as well as more than 50 Augustana College student contributors (art and anthropology classes). Interviews with 11 artists in the collection are described by studio art professors Megan Quinn and Rowen Schussheim-Anderson, and Augustana College Art Museum Director Sherry Maurer.

Also included are 36 photogravures by Edward Curtis from his volume The Hopi, and a substantial bibliography. Dating from pre-1600 to the present, the collection documents continuing traditions and the artistic recognition achieved by Native American potters during the 20th century. The book can be purchased through the Augustana College Bookstore website.
