Dangerous Minds in Germany LC

This program is expected to return for Spring Term 2018.

A Learning Community comprised of joint courses in History and Philosophy on Augustana's campus in the spring, followed by a 3-week summer field study program centered in Berlin and Leipzig, Germany.  This unique study abroad program combines shared learning in the two fields of study and four weeks of on-the-ground experiential learning in Germany. 

Eligibility:  This program is open to all students in good academic standing (2.00 GPA or higher) and all majors. No prior knowledge or study of the German language is required. 

Recommended For: This program is open to all majors.  Students with an interest in History or Philosophy may find this program particularly rewarding.

Academics: This program fulfills both an LC and two LP requirements.  Coursework will begin in Spring Term, but will not be completed until the early summer (June) immersion in Berlin. Seniors who particiipate will be considered summer graduates.  No knowledge of German is required.  All courses are taught in English.  Courses included in this 2-course LC are:

HISTORY 315: Modern Germany.  Taught by Dr. D. Ellis. (PP)

PHILOSOPHY 341: Phenomenology & Existentialism.  Taught by Dr. H. Storl (PH)

Seniors should pay particular attention to the timing of this program.   Senior students who need any portion of this coursework in order to complete degree requirements do not graduate in the spring. They must apply as a summer graduate, but can choose to participate in the commencement ceremony and march with fellow seniors. Contact the Registrar for your questions.

Cost: The charge for the 2016 program is $3,500. The cost for Spring 2018 will be available in Fall of 2016.

Cost includes: Ground transportation, housing in Berlin and Leipzig, group excursions, health insurance and many program meals. 

Cost does not include: Airfare, some independent meals, and discretionary spending.

Financial Aid:  As this program does not include tuition charges, only travel expenses, financial aid for the Spring Term cannot be applied to the program costs.  These costs are in addition to the tuition and room/board charges for the term of the program.  This program is Augie Choice eligible for all students who have completed 6 terms or 60 credits (junior status) or higher at the time of departure, including students who will complete their 6th term during the spring of 2016.  Transfer students who have also completed 3 terms or 30 credits as of the end of Spring Term 2016 are also eligible for the Augie Choice grant.
