Volunteer Opportunities

Many Augustana study away programs offer the opportunity to serve local communities around the globe, but if you are seeking to participate in a volunteer or service-learning program independent of Augustana's study away programming, you might consider one of these organizations which have hosted Augustana students in the past.

AEON Corporation  AEON Corporation, a privately owned Japanese company, has over 300 English conversation schools in Japan. AEON employs more than 3000 people including a select staff of 800 non-Japanese English conversation teachers. Schools are located throughout Japan.

American Council for Voluntary Action  InterAction is the largest alliance of U.S.-based international development and humanitarian nongovernmental organizations. With more than 160 members operating in every developing country, we work to overcome poverty, exclusion and suffering by advancing social justice and basic dignity for all.

Cross Cultural Solutions  Volunteers participate in English training, health care and social development programs.

Earthwatch Institute - Volunteers may choose to serve in a variety of countries in latin America, Africa, Europe, the Americas and Asia.  Most projects undertake the study of endangered ecosystems, public health, historical preservation, sustainable development biodiversity, and resource management.

Global Citizens Network  Students do mostly environmental work at different sites.

Global Service Corps  Students spend three to four weeks working on various projects, such as teaching English to Thai students, doing AIDS education in Kenya, or doing construction and environment work in Costa Rica. A clearinghouse for many volunteer abroad opportunities.  You can search by country or look at featured programs.

Institute of International Education  IIE publishes the most comprehensive data on study and work abroad programs available. 

International Partnership for Service Learning  IPSL incorporates study and service, so that students do approximately 20 hours of service a week and also take classes, which may be language-specific, depending on the country.

International Volunteer Program  IVPA is an alliance of nonprofit, nongovernmental organized based in North America, that are involved in international volunteer and internship exchanges.

Love Volunteers  A New Zealand-based organization that facilitates international service & volunteering opportunties in many countries.

Mobility International USA  Mobility International's mission is to empower people with disabilities around the world through international exchange, information, technical assistance and training, and to ensure the inclusion of people with disabilities in international exchange and development programs.

Operation Crossroads Africa - OCA promotes cross-cultural sharing and understanding in 15 countries in Africa doing work such as community health, agriculture, reforestation, construction and education.

Peace Corps  Discover a new culture while improving the lives of others.

Study Abroad American Institute for Foreign Study  In affiliation with 18 international universities, AIFS annually organizes study abroad programs for more than 5,000 American students during the academic year and the summer.
