Exchange Program at Uppsala University

Spend a semester in Sweden and study in English, Swedish or both.

Applications for Fall 2018 or Spring 2019 will be open Nov. 1 through Jan. 15.

Augustana College has a longstanding relationship with Uppsala University, one of Europe's most prestigious academic centers and Sweden's premiere school for the Liberal Arts.  Located just north of Stockholm, Uppsala is a quintessential european college town.  Founded in 1477, the university is one of the oldest and most prestigious schools in northern Europe.  With our exchange program students in any major can spend a semester or a year in Sweden, earning 12-30 credits in numerous fields.

This program is open to any major, and highly recommended for students in Scandinavian Studies, Business Administration, Political Science, History, English and all traditional Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Courste of: Coursework is available in both English and Swedish.  Students who opt for a one-semester program will be off campus for an entire term as well as half of our Winter trimester, but may elect to take courses on campus in Rock Island for the other half of the Winter Term.

Eligibility: This program is open to all students in their sophomore year or later with a GPA of 2.50.  Students should consult with their academic advisors before application to ensure that the program will fit with their other academic goals.  Courses must be pre-approved before the student leaves for Sweden.

Anticipated Program Cap:  6 students

Academics:  The expansive catalog of Uppsala University is at your disposal.  It is recommended that students study Swedish as part of their program, but may also take courses in a wide range of fields.  All courses must be pre-approved. Learning perspectives will be granted based upon the Augustana course equivalencies.

Students on this, or any exchange program, must receive a grade of C or higher on all coursework in order to receive Augustana credit for their courses.

Calendar:  Uppsala University operates on a semester system, with Fall semester running September to late January and Spring Semeseter running from late January through June.  For this reason we recommend that students who are interested in this exchange opt either for the Spring semester or for a full academic year program.  Students on the full-year program should ensure that they enroll in courses equivalent to 24 credits at Augustana, 30 is preferable.

Students enrolling at Uppsala for the Spring Semester should plan to enroll in courses equivalent to 12 credits (15 is preferable) and complete their Augustana Winter Term program by enrolling in 3 credits of coursework during the December 5-week module at Augustana. This guarantees enough credits to retain full-time student status for financial aid purposes.

Students on the spring semester should be prepared to remain in Sweden through June to complete final exams.

Seniors should be aware that due to the Uppsala calendar extending through June, all seniors who enroll in the Uppsala exchange will be listed as summer graduates rather than spring graduates.

Cost:  Students will pay standard Augustana tuition and fees for the time they are in Sweden.  The tuition is treated as 1/2 of Winter Term and all of Spring Term (for the Spring semester program).  There are no additional study abroad fees with this program.

Cost includes: The program fee includes only tuition for the 1.5 terms that the student is studying in Sweden and coverage from Augustana's international traveler's health insurance.  This insurance covers illnesses and injuries which occur while abroad.  Students with preexisting conditions or ongoing health treatment may wish to discuss additional insurance with their families as an option to cover these ongoing health needs.

Cost does not include:
Airfare, accomodations in Uppsala, meals, ground transportation or health insurance.

Accomodations are arranged with assistance from Uppsala University but are paid on site, not through Augustana College.

Housing: Students at Uppsala University live in student apartments throughout the city of Uppsala.  Uppsala has a Housing Office dedicated to finding appropriate accomodations for its students, including international exchange students.

Financial Aid:  Students participating in an exchange program are eligible for the same financial aid they would receive were they on campus in Illinois.  This includes grants, scholarships and loan eligibility, but not work-study arrangements.  The Uppsala Exchange is both Augie Choice and IOP Grant eligible.  The $1,000 IOP Grants are competitive and limited in number.

Freistat Grant: If a student chooses to earn at least 6 credits of their coursework in the host country language while participating in an exchange program (Germany, Hong Kong, Japan or Sweden), they may also apply for a Freistat Grant for Language Immersion.  This grant can be $2,000 or more and requires that at least 6 credits of coursework be either language study or courses taught in the host country's language (other than English).  For more information on the Freistat Grant, please visit this website.

Augie Choice:  All exchange programs are Augie Choice eligible for students who have completed 6 terms or 60 credits at Augustana prior to departure.  Transfer students who have completed 3 terms or 30 credits at Augustana prior to departure are also eligible for Augie Choice grants.

Why an exchange program might be right for you?

Are you an independent person, willing to challenge yourself in a new educational environment?  Do you want intensive language study, or perhaps you want to really get to know a new part of the world?  Do you want an authentic experience in an international university?   Whether for a term, a semester or a year, exchange programs are perfect for students who want to experience what life and what college is like around the world.  An exchange lets you go deeper into the host culture than you will if you travel with a large group of Augie students, and it gives you the ability to take classes with native students.

Add to this the fact that because you pay Augie tuition, exchange program courses are not transfer credits, and can count towards your graduation requirements.  Also, in many cases exchange programs represent the least expensive programs available, since you are paying Augustana tuition, room or room & board, rather than paying both for tuition and for program costs of an Augie group program.

It takes an adventurous, self-confident and motivated student to truly get the most out of an exchange program, but if you are excited by the idea of living, studying and experiencing another culture without the "Augie bubble", exchanges might be just what you are looking for.
