Holistic Advising Model

Augustana's holistic advising model is one which branches beyond the academic decisions of which classes to take and when. Holistic advising encompasses a student's entire educational experience including academic, co-curricular, social and career goal achievement. While each student has a primary advisor, our model of holistic advising includes a collaborative team-based approach involving a unique network of support for every student, including advisors, career counselors, residential life staff, coaches, instructors, and peer mentors.

Structure of Advising at Augustana

First-Year students are assigned a First-Year Advisor and a First-Year Mentor to help them successfully transition into life as a college student. Most First-Year Advisors are faculty members and all are specially trained to advise students during their first year at Augustana. First-Year Mentors, current Augustana students, work with First-Year Advisors to provide support to students. Students are advised by their First-Year Advisor until they declare a major.

Transfer students are assigned a Transfer Advisor and Transfer Mentor to help them acclimate to the culture of Augustana and understand their degree requirements. Students transferring 60 or more credits will declare a major soon after arriving on campus but will continue to meet with their Transfer Advisor and Mentor for support. Students transferring fewer than 60 credits will be advised by their Transfer Advisor until they declare a major.

Once students declare a major, they transition to a departmental advisor in their area of study. This advisor will advise the student through graduation.
