Suffix Approval - Diversity Requirement "D" Suffix

A three-credit course that focuses significantly on an aspect of social or cultural diversity within the United States. Learning perspective courses can meet this requirement, but a first-year LS course cannot satisfy this requirement. A course cannot carry both a “G” and a “D” suffix at the same time.

In these courses students should begin to:

  • Understand the multiple factors that have contributed to the creation of identities of cultural or social subgroups within the United States.
  • Identify, evaluate and critique attitudes toward one or more of these groups (attitudes, for example, based on perceived differences of gender, race, ethnicity, class, creed, age, ability/disability, sexual orientation, etc.).
  • Acknowledge the distinctive contributions of one or more such group(s).
  • Develop an appreciation of the heritage and life experiences of one or more such group(s).
  • Develop skills for effectively functioning within a diversified society.
