Last month, Margaret Morse (Art History) published an essay, "The Venetian Portego: Family Piety and Public Prestige," in the volume The Early Modern Italian Domestic Interior, 1400-1700: Objects, Spaces, Domesticities, edited by Erin J. Campbell, Stephanie R. Miller, and Elizabeth Carroll Consavari (Ashgate). This study examines the religious paintings and pious objects that were commonly displayed in the central reception halls of Renaissance Venetian homes and reassesses the traditional characterization of the domestic sphere as secular space.
