Community Engagement Center (CEC)


Join your colleagues on Thursdays at 9:00 AM in the CEC space in Sorensen Hall for Coffee and Conversation. Talk to your colleagues and meet all the new faculty that have moved into Sorensen for the year. Enjoy a hot cup of Starbucks coffee ($1.50 for a 12 oz. cup of coffee, FREE for the first 10 people). Welcome back to campus! We are excited about the possibilities created by the restructuring of our office as announced by Dr. Lawrence earlier this month. By integrating internship and career-related services, we hope to streamline offerings to our students as well as increase our leverage with employers with the intent of increasing opportunities for our students and alumni. While we have to hire for two key coordinator positions this term, we are nonetheless planning a full term of workshops and events. In next week's newsletter, we will have a complete calendar. For now, a couple of key dates:

If you would like to access Augie Hub, our on-line career management system, go to Augie Hub and create an alumni account. Some have expressed concern about the volume of email blasts that they would receive if they register. First, there are very few email blasts that are sent to alumni. Second, you can opt out of all email communications in the privacy tab of your profile. Simiple select "no" to the first and third options. We are here to help you create an account. The Center for Vocational Reflection is offering a number of in-class presentations, ranging between 5 minutes to 1.75 hours. Please let us know if you have any interest or questions about incorporating any of these sessions into your course.

Presentation: Introduction to the CEC

Length: 5-10min

Description: The Community Engagement Center helps connect Augie students to themselves, their world and their future.  CEC staff and resources can help studentsdiscern their calling, volunteer locally or globally, do entrepreneurial work, study abroad, pursue an internship, apply for Augie Choice, and prepare for a career or graduate school.  This presentation will introduce students to the CEC offices that support those endeavors: the Center for Vocational Reflection, EDGE/Entrepreneurial Development, Internships and Career Services, International and Off-campus Programs, and Service Learning.


Presentation: Understanding Yourself and How it Changes Everything

Length: 45min

Description: This presentation introduces students to the idea of vocation (i.e. the place where one's talents and passions intersect with the needs of the world).  Through various interactive activities and reflections that will help students better understand their own talents and passions, we will guide students into stepping back and focusing first upon who they are and who they want to be, before planning the many things they will do.


Presentation: How to Find Your Fit and Choose Your Major Along the Way

Length: 45min

Description: Struggling to balance what you love with a practical path?  Unsure of your purpose or how it relates to your academic major or other activities and pursuits?  At this presentation we'll talk about matching up your interests, talents, and experiences with important academic decisions, such as selecting the right major for you.  We will also shatter some myths about the relationship between academic majors and future career opportunities.


Presentation: Using an Interest or Career Inventory with Your Students

Length: 30min-2hours depending upon inventory selection

Description: We can guide your class through an interest or career inventory to help students better understand themselves as well as consider how their reported interests relate to various academic and professional paths.  Some inventories are done online while others are done via hardcopy and can be taken, self-scored, and discussed in one classroom session (requires 1.25 to 2 hours for the COPS, or 30-45min for the College Majors Scorecard).  Or, an inventory could be introduced in one class, sent home with the students to complete, then interpreted and discussed in another class session (30min).  Primary career and interest inventories include the COPS - Career Occupational Preference SystemStrong Interest Inventory, and the College Majors Scorecard.


Presentation: Volunteering in the Quad Cities

Length: 15-30min

Description: This session will explore the various reasons for and benefits of volunteering, as well as some best practices to consider.  Students will learn about some of the needs and opportunities that various community partners have communicated to Augustana, how student gifts can help meet those needs, and students will also receive the detail and contact information for those volunteer opportunities.


We also are glad to speak with you and tailor a presentation, or series of presentations, to better meet the specific interests of your students and course.

This year's Volunteer Fair will be held on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM in the College Center lobby. The fair offers agencies and organizations from around the Quad Cities area an opportunity to recruit Augustana volunteers by providing information about their programs and volunteer needs. Many faculty have found it useful to encourage/require attendance at the fair as a meansof providing students with information regarding opportunities to get involved in our community.
