The Figge is excited to host PechaKucha Night as part of Thursdays at the Figge. This fun, informal event allows community members to share their ideas and interests-from recent travels to hobbies like knitting to major academic pursuits. Anyone can present at a PechaKucha Night, and the format is simple: presenters are allowed to show 20 images, each for 20 seconds, while they talk about their topic along with the images. During the month of March, Augustana will participate in the Campus Religious and Spiritual Climate Survey administered by Eboo Patel's organization, Interfaith Youth Core. Current sophomores, juniors and seniors will be invited to participate in the survey. This survey is meant to explore the ways that campus climate affects student experiences and development while in college. The survey period will be March 1-March 30, 2013. Students will get weekly email reminders to take the survey that include a customized link for each student. Your help in encouraging participation will be appreciated. We hope to hear from students who represent a wide spectrum of worldviews, including religious and non-religious perspectives.

Camp Kesem Augustana College would like to remind faculty, administration and staff that applications are now open for their 2013 camp. Camp Kesem is a national, non-profit organization that provides a week long, free summer camp for children whose parents have, have had, or have passed away from cancer. The Augustana chapter held its first camp last summer, hosting 35 campers ages 6 to 13 for the weeklong event. This year, the Augustana chapter wishes to accept 60 campers ages 6 to 16 from the Quad City through Iowa area. We currently have 24 open camper positions available on a first come, first serve basis.

Nova Singers, under the direction of Dr. Laura Lane, presents two performances of A Procession Winding Around Me, featuring classical guitarist Fareed Haqueon Saturday, April 6 at 7:30 PM in Kresge Recital Hall at Knox College in Galesburg, and on Sunday, April 7 at 4:00 PM at First Congregational Church in Moline. Nova Singers will join forces with Fareed Haque to explore the sound of choir and guitar. Featuring Jeffrey Van's A Procession Winding Around Me and Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Romancero Gitano, both written for a chorus of voices and a guitar accompaniment, this program is truly not to be missed.

"In each piece," says Dr. Laura Lane, "the guitar paints images of the text, such as rushing water, dissonance, or even aggression. These works highlight the incredible spectrum of emotion both guitar and voice are capable of conveying."

The Augustana Student Research/Inquiry Committee is accepting applications for Student-Faculty Academic Partnership Grants until April 8. This is a new funding opportunity offered through the Committee, which supports student involvement in a faculty member's scholarly and/or creative projects. Enriching Inquiry Through Writing Assignment Design

This session is a repeat performance of a popular May 2012 workshop that Dr. Hanstedt lead at Augie, exploring ways to design more effective writing assignments.  More particularly, this 90-minute session will provide faculty with the opportunity to move beyond traditional "cut and paste" research papers toward more effective assignments that help us achieve our goals in the classroom while engaging students in more sincere inquiry.

Supporting Student Writing Without Killing Ourselves 

This 4-hour session is driven by the understanding that even the best writing assignments won't achieve their desired ends if students don't have the necessary coaching and revision opportunities.  At the same time, this workshop recognizes that most faculty are already overwhelmed by their teaching, service, and research schedules.  How, then, to give students what they need without burying ourselves alive? 

This workshop will provide an array of strategies from the very easy to the more intensive but still manageable, placing an emphasis on the best research on writing and student learning.  Attendees will be encouraged to adapt and revise strategies to fit their own teaching methods and the expectations of their fields. 

Paul Hanstedt bio:
Paul Hanstedt is a Professor of English at Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia, where he has worked since he received his Ph.D. in 1996.  During his tenure as Director of General Education from 2003-2008, Hanstedt led his campus in a successful curricular revision that resulted in a theme-based general education program featuring writing, quantitative reasoning, and oral communications across the curriculum.  The co-recipient of a half-million dollar FIPSE grant for sustainable faculty development in general education, Hanstedt continues to help in the implementation of this model, serving as Roanoke's Coordinator of Faculty Development.

In 2009, Hanstedt received a Fulbright to spend a year in Asia as part of a team supporting Hong Kong universities as they shifted from a three-year British system to a four-year American-style approach that includes general education programs and courses designed to meet the unique needs of the Hong Kong populace.  While in Asia, he worked with over a dozen different universities and community colleges in Hong Kong, Macau, and on the Mainland.  Since his return to the United States, he has continued to consult with institutions abroad and also visits campuses in North America to discuss matters of general education, course design, writing, and assessment. 

Paul is the author of numerous articles, essays, and stories, contributing to The Chronicle of Higher Education, MLA's The Profession, the Association of American College's and Universities' Liberal Education, and literary journals.  He writes a great deal about food and travel, and regularly appears on Virginia Public Radio reading essays on anything from Winnie the Poo to playing the accordion-which he also does, very poorly. 

Hanstedt is the author of two books:  Hong Konged, a memoir of his year in Asia with three kids under the age of ten, and General Education Essentials, an introduction for college faculty to current trends in liberal education.

Joseph B. Koek, Holocaust Survivor

Joe Koek, born in the Netherlands in 1930, was hidden in the Dutch underground during World War II. When he was 11, Joe and two sisters left their parents and never saw them again. They were moved from location to location to avoid the Nazis, and all three survived. Joe lives in Chicago.

Alpha Phi Omega is a co-ed service fraternity on campus based upon three cardinal principles: leadership, friendship, and service. Each year our chapter, Lambda Rho, organizes an annual charity auction called Ugly Man On Campus (UMOC). This is our largest and most successful charity event. This year's proceeds will benefit Augustana College's Camp Kesem.

Camp Kesem is a week-long summer camp, hosted by Augustana students, for children ages 6-13 whose parents have, had, or passed away from cancer. This camp provides a supportive environment and a fun experience that gives kids a chance to be kids. Camp Kesem also allows college students to channel their passion for making a difference, while developing critical leadership skills for long-term social impact. Last year was the first year Augustana College has been a host. We are very excited about the continuation of this program and are thrilled to host an auction that benefits them!

Annual student fellowship. Fellow will develop a lesson plan on an aspect of Jewish culture and present the lesson in area schools. The directory automatically lists Areas of Expertise found on each faculty member's directory page. Thus, if someone has listed "Cell biology" on his or her directory, it will show up as a topic in the "Areas of special expertise" list on the page. Clicking on a topic in the list will bring up the names of faculty who are matched with that term. (Also, if someone keyword searches for that term, he or she will get the same result.) You can see how it works here:

First, if you don't have any areas of expertise listed on your profile, please consider adding some. Go to and use your network login. The Expertise field is at the bottom of the page. You may add or change your information on this page whenever you like, but we would appreciate an update by March 22nd.

Second, think about how your audience might frame search terms. Some people using the directory will know precisely what they are seeking; others will have only a vague idea. It's perfectly fine to put more than one term in for one topic (such as "ornithology" and also "birds.")

The Tredway reference librarians are pleased to introduce a new service to you and your students: appointments for in-depth research help.  Following models at institutions such as Oberlin, Grinnell, and Amherst - as well as responding to a trend in our library of students requesting more one-on-one consultations with librarians - we wished to provide students with another means by which to reach out to us for research help.  We anticipate this service will be most beneficial to upper-level students working on Senior Inquiry or other advanced research projects, but it is available to students at all levels.

Student Learning through Mentored Scholarship (SLMS) is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed, open-access journal that focuses on mentored learning within higher education. The journal engages in disseminating innovative practices that demonstrate how academic professionals, community leaders, and professionals from the government or private sectors employ supportive mentoring to increase learning success and educational effectiveness by engaging directly with students or less experienced faculty. Critical to success is the mentees' initiative in exercising a participatory role in design and enactment of the learning experience.
