This Week's Message

Over the last few weeks many of you have offered helpful insights on the statement of learning outcomes that the Assessment for Improvement Committee is developing. We hope you will continue to provide your feedback as we move forward with this process.

It is easy to dismiss the learning outcomes statement as just "something we need for the HLC 2015-16 visit." We would like to make the case that while a statement of learning outcomes may seem rather perfunctory, generic, and simplistic, it is really a critical starting point for a much richer conversation on what an Augustana education really means. First, the statement should provide a framework for more carefully identifying the learning experiences that we offer, how it comports with what we want students to learn, and the plans we have in place to assess our impact. Some questions we should ask include: What are we trying to do? Why are we trying to do it? How do we know if we are doing it well? Answers to these questions will help guide our decision making and future efforts as we continuously work to improve student learning at Augustana.

Second, the statement provides a common vocabulary that brings us together. We move beyond thinking about individual courses or majors to considering our collective endeavor. It also helps integrate opportunities both in and outside the classroom that have the potential to transform students. It encourages us to focus on the many different people, programs and possibilities that contribute to a student's growth. It unites the entire campus in a common purpose.

Third, this statement makes us publically responsible for what we do. It is a pledge to students and their families that we have designed an education that will prepare them for our diverse and changing world, and it is a guarantee to employers and graduate schools that our alumni possess the knowledge, abilities and dispositions to be successful. A statement of learning outcomes is a step toward transparency with our varied constituents.

In the upcoming weeks and again in the fall term, we hope you will engage in this discussion. This is just the beginning of an ongoing examination of the value of attending Augustana College.
