Community Engagement Center (CEC)

Congratulations to Mohammed Hussain the winner of the 2012 CVR Essay Award!

The Center for Vocational Reflection partners each year with the Celebration of Learning to offer a $250 award to the best reflective essay submitted in conjunction with an entry in the Celebration of Learning.  The essay addresses the question:  "Ten years from now, you are interviewing for a job; the interviewer asks you to describe an academic achievement that left you feeling personally fulfilled. You decide to describe the learning and research experience that culminated in your submission to the Celebration of Learning as your example. Please respond to the interviewer's follow-up questions: Which of your talents, skills, or characteristics did this project highlight or develop? What personal interests did you get to explore? What impact did this have on your community(ies)? What did you learn about who you are called to be?"

Mohammed submitted a beautifully written essay about his time as an intern at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.  He wrote not only about his time shadowing an oncologist, but lessons learned about shared humanity from biking past strangers and the homeless on his daily commute to the center, lessons about optimism and impending mortality in cancer stricken families, and ultimately lessons informing his path toward becoming a physician and a person who, in Mohammed's words, would always be "questioning myself whether I was doing my utmost" to benefit the patient as well as the stranger he rides past on the street.  Mohammed credits his motivation to engage in his CoL research project, a melanoma immunology study looking at how the body can enhance its defenses against skin cancer tumors, to his time spent as shadowing in oncology.

Mohammed will be attending Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago next year.  He will be receiving the CVR Essay Award this Saturday, May 5th during the opening session (9:30am start) at the Celebration of Learning in 102 Hanson Science.   Congratulations again to Mohammed Hussain.
