The Augustana Symphonic Band performs this concert in preparation for director James Lambrecht's departure for a guest residency in Japan, where he will guest conduct the Musashino Academia Musicae Wind Emsemble in Tokyo, Japan. A goal of this concert is to raise money for Lambrecht to help furnish several new trees in one of the devastated areas of Japan.

Kelly Whalen '10 recently had her communication studies senior inquiry published by East Hall Press. Caring for Women: A History of Edgerton Women's Health Center documents the 40-year history of this community resource. Kelly conducted hours of interviews and sifted through countless letters, brochures, and meeting minutes before beginning to write what would become a 75-page book. Her project supervisors were Connie Ghinazzi, Sharon Varallo and Ellen Hay.

Several examples of work by the late adjunct professor James Konrad will be included.

If you want to find your life, give it away. The Kingdom of God belongs to the poor, the meek, the merciful, the peacemakers...Welcome to the upside-down Kingdom.

What would the world look like if we took Jesus seriously? Shane Claiborne unveils the tragic messes we've made of our world and the tangible hope that another world is possible. Shane graduated from Eastern University, St. Davids, Pennsylvania, and did graduate work at Princeton Seminary. He is a founding partner of The Simple Way, a faith community in inner city Philadelphia that has helped to birth and connect radical communities around the world. The community is called an example of the New Monasticism movement. Claiborne is also an activist for nonviolence and service to the poor.

Shane writes and travels extensively speaking about peacemaking, social justice and Jesus.

Augie Reads Book Display

In honor of the 2011 Augie Reads selection, Fahrenheit 451, the library has mounted a display of books belonging to Augie faculty, staff, and students, books that have been challenged or banned at some point in history, books that are beloved by their owners. Short quotations accompany the books that explain the owner's passion about his or her book. Senior Nathan McDowell is featured in the large poster for the display, and many of the books' owners are featured in smaller READ posters distributed around campus.Contributors to the display will read short selections from the banned books on Tuesday, September 20, at 7:00 p.m. in Brew by the Slough.

New Exhibit in Special Collections
"Food For Thought"

Interest in food and sustainability issues has been growing at Augustana, as exemplified in programs such as Farm to Fork, Augie Acres, and last year's Food Reads series. But what did an interest in food look like before the current century? Usually food isn't allowed in Special Collections, but the exhibit "Food for Thought: Books on Food and Cooking from Special Collections" uses historical food-related books to examine that question. This exhibit will be on display in Special Collections, on the first floor of the library, throughout fall term.



Help us celebrate the 10th Annual International Food Festival!

For this 10th anniversary we are working hard to have some new and exciting dishes for you to enjoy and we hope to have a few surprises as well! Over the past few years we have been asked to put together a cookbook of not only the recipes of the dishes served, but also to include favorites from the Augustana Community. We need your favorite recipes! Go exotic! Go international! Go Midwest or Southwestern! Whatever you want - we'd love to have your favorite recipes. The book will be published and available for sale at the Food Festival which will be held on Saturday, February 4th, and throughout the spring term.

CUR (Council on Undergraduate Research)

CUR is calling for students to submit an abstract of their research that represents any of CUR's disciplinary divisions (Arts and Humanities, Biology, Chemistry, Geosciences, Health Sciences, Mathematics/Computer Science, Physics/Astronomy, Psychology, and Social Sciences). Each abstract should explain the work that was performed and discuss the importance of the work to society (i.e., what larger problem were you trying to solve or understand?).

Abstract submissions will only be accepted by using an on-line submission form.
Prior to submitting the form, students should gather the contact information for all co-authors, advisors and sponsors (if applicable), prepare a short vitae/resume, and poster abstract. A document listing the information required for submission can be found HERE.
Both portions (the electronic application and the electronic recommendation letter [on institution letterhead]) are to be submitted by October 18, 2011. Abstracts that are received without a letter of recommendation will not be considered. Only one letter of recommendation should be sent, and the signature on the letter must match the name of the advisor listed in the application. Multiple advisors may sign the single letter. The letter of recommendation should include the following information about the student:
1) progress toward completion of the project and probability of completion by March 1 of that year,
2) command of the subject matter,
3) communication skills, and
4) prior experience presenting the material to both technical and non-technical audiences.
THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION for the 2012 Posters on the Hill Session IS OCTOBER 18, 2011- no exceptions. After October 18, 2011 you will no longer be able to access the submission form.

This is a unique opportunity that will have a very positive impact on the future of federal funding for undergraduate research. Undergraduates from both public and private predominantly undergraduate institutions, research universities, and those who have done their work at a national laboratory or facility to submit abstracts are encouraged to apply. A committee of CUR members anticipates selecting approximately 60 posters for participation in the evening poster session and approximately 15 posters for the luncheon panel and poster session. Students selected for participation will be notified in late January.

Funds are not available through CUR to support costs associated with student travel and lodging for the poster session

In addition to the evening poster session and reception and luncheon panel, there will be field trip opportunities the day before, followed by an evening orientation session with a light dinner, and morning speaker session with a continental breakfast the day of the sessions. Students and their advisors will have an opportunity to visit their Congressional Representatives and Senators to talk about undergraduate research.

The primary selection criteria include:
• project quality, (e.g. timeliness, level of completion, and interest to both the scholarly and general communities),
• communication skills (e.g. being understandable by any educated person), and
• disciplinary and geographical distribution.
It is unlikely that more than one student project will be selected per school, but up to four students may be associated with a project.

2011-2012 Community Lecture Series

The Augustana Center for the Study of Ethics is pleased to announce the 2011-2012 Community Lecture Series. One presentation of each lecture will be scheduled for on-campus. If there is a particular course that you are teaching this year that might interface with one of the lectures, we will schedule it for the term you are teaching the course. We encourage you to bring the lectures to the attention of groups and organizations of which you might be a part. Each participant agrees to present her or his lecture once on campus and up to three times off campus. The Center for the Study of Ethics pays the presentation stipends so that the lectures can be made available to community groups and organizations without cost. 2011-2012 Faculty Research Forum (FRF) Schedule

The FPF is a friendly, interdisciplinary working group of researchers and writers that meet two times a term to workshop works-in-progress (e.g., book chapters, grant proposals, conference papers, journal articles, book proposals, and other forms of scholarly production). Volunteers submit their work to the group, and then we gather over drinks and snacks to ask questions and provide constructive critiques--all in an effort to improve our research and writing.

In years past, the group has consisted of a good mix of people-from assistant to full professors in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. (People with sabbaticals or pre-tenure paid leaves often find the group especially valuable.) We ask only that members make a commitment to give and to receive feedback on works-in-progress. This typically means that each member presents a draft about once a year and attends the other meetings as regularly as possible.

The times for all meetings are 4:30 - 6:00 PM in the Dahl Room of the College Center. Dates for this year's FRF workshops are:

A 1977 graduate of the college, Dr. Nolan first worked at Augustana in 1982, when he served for two years as resident director of Seminary Hall. He returned to Augustana in the 1990s, joining the faculty as an adjunct instructor of English and advisor to campus publications. He had served the college as both a teacher and administrator.
