NU Directions Chamber Brass is a contemporary chamber ensemble dedicated to breaking down barriers of musical categories. This rhythmically explosive genre-bending brass and percussion ensemble brings together classical, jazz, and free improvising musicians to combine their talents and form a new innovative brand of chamber music. NDCB is comprised of two trumpets, two trombones, and two percussionists. Each musician offers his or her own voice to create a truly unique sound.

Trumpet artist, composer, and NDCB founder Thomas Madeja created this ensemble in response to a growing need for accessibly presented original sounding contemporary music. This also drives the group's commitment to education. In a concert setting, master class, or interactive recital, NDCB invites its audience to experience its unique creative process.

There are no limitations in regard to performance venues either. NDCB has performed in such varied institutions as concert halls, schools, salons, museums, churches and jazz and nightclubs. Audiences from all walks of life continue to be intrigued and stimulated by this truly one of a kind ensemble.

"Women in American Politics-Why So Few?"

Every election year we ask the same big question-Could this be the next "Year of the Woman" in American politics? Yet, time and again we see only marginal gains in the numbers of women elected to political offices. In fact, the 2010 elections even resulted in a decrease in the numbers of women elected to political office for the first time in several decades. Why are there so few women in politics? What will it take to increase women's representation in U.S. politics? Most importantly, how will you contribute to boosting women's share of political power?

Wendy G. Smooth is Assistant Professor of Public Policy in the Department of Women's Studies at The Ohio State University and a faculty affiliate with the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity. Currently, Dr. Smooth is completing her first book entitled, Power and Influence: The Impact of Race and Gender in American State Legislatures (University of Michigan Press, under contract), which focuses on African American women elected to state legislatures across the country and examines the conditions under which they are most effective in representing their communities. Her work appears in numerous outlets including the academic journals Politics & Gender and the Journal of Women, Politics and Policy as well as numerous edited volumes. Dr. Smooth is a graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana, the only historically black catholic university in the country. There she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and went on to earn her Graduate Certificate in Women's Studies, and both her Masters of Science, and doctorate degrees in Government and Politics from the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland.
Dr. Smooth's visit is supported by an endowed fund honoring Stanley Erickson, a long-time political science professor.


A discussion on Chapter 10 of the proposed revised Faculty Handbook

Please plan on attending a Faculty Forum on Thursday, September 15, 2011and/or Friday Conversations on Friday, September 16, 2011 to discuss Chapter 10 of the revised Faculty Handbook. Chapter 10 addresses policies that apply to all college employees including: CODE OF CONDUCT AND ETHICS, and POLICY ON HARASSMENT AND DISCRIMINATION.

A Memorial Tribute to Jim Konrad
August 23 - September 17, 2011

Recognized as one of the top artists of our region, Jim (James) Konrad (1943-2011) is fondly remembered for his willingness to share his expertise on the particulars of artists' materials and methods-whether it was conserving a painting, discussing art history or making chalk pastels from scratch. He joined the faculty at Augustana in 1989 as an assistant professor. He was an instructor in printmaking, drawing and art education at Augustana when he passed away. This exhibition will be an overview of his life's work.

On the anniversary of his birthday, Jim Konrad's artistic contributions will be celebrated by Augustana faculty, area artists and supporters.


Augie Reads Book Display
Thomas Tredway Library, 2nd floor

In honor of the 2011 Augie Reads selection, Fahrenheit 451, the library has mounted a display of books belonging to Augie faculty, staff, and students, books that have been challenged or banned at some point in history, books that are beloved by their owners. Short quotations accompany the books that explain the owner's passion about his or her book. Senior Nathan McDowell is featured in the large poster for the display, and many of the books' owners are featured in smaller READ posters distributed around campus.Contributors to the display will read short selections from the banned books on Tuesday, September 20, at 7:00 p.m. in Brew by the Slough.

New Exhibit in Special Collections
"Food For Thought"

Interest in food and sustainability issues has been growing at Augustana, as exemplified in programs such as Farm to Fork, Augie Acres, and last year's Food Reads series. But what did an interest in food look like before the current century? Usually food isn't allowed in Special Collections, but the exhibit "Food for Thought: Books on Food and Cooking from Special Collections" uses historical food-related books to examine that question. This exhibit will be on display in Special Collections, on the first floor of the library, throughout fall term.

What: The place to show off your best dessert and be crowned best cook at Augie.
When: Friday, September 16, 2011 (Week 4) at 3:00 PM
Where: Student will pick up your desserts from your office and set up your own persona table in Westerlin
Why: All the $ that is raised from selling your food will go to Habitat for Humanity.

Help us celebrate the 10th Annual International Food Festival!

For this 10th anniversary we are working hard to have some new and exciting dishes for you to enjoy and we hope to have a few surprises as well! Over the past few years we have been asked to put together a cookbook of not only the recipes of the dishes served, but also to include favorites from the Augustana Community. We need your favorite recipes! Go exotic! Go international! Go Midwest or Southwestern! Whatever you want - we'd love to have your favorite recipes. The book will be published and available for sale at the Food Festival which will be held on Saturday, February 4th, and throughout the spring term.

What do we need from you? We need 3 - 4 recipes. Please include all ingredients, measurements and instructions. Send your recipes to Jane Tiedge
When do we need them? Friday, September 30.
Proceeds from the sale of the cookbook will go to help support international students on campus.


CUR (Council on Undergraduate Research)


CUR is calling for students to submit an abstract of their research that represents any of CUR's disciplinary divisions (Arts and Humanities, Biology, Chemistry, Geosciences, Health Sciences, Mathematics/Computer Science, Physics/Astronomy, Psychology, and Social Sciences). Each abstract should explain the work that was performed and discuss the importance of the work to society (i.e., what larger problem were you trying to solve or understand?). Abstract submissions will only be accepted by using an on-line submission form. Please refer to the "Information Required to Submit" document HERE as this will layout the required application information the student will need to prepare prior to starting the submission process.

Both portions (the electronic application and the electronic recommendation letter [on institution letterhead]) should be submitted by October 18, 2011 Abstracts that are received for which no letter of recommendation has been submitted will not be considered. Only one letter of recommendation should be sent, and the signature on the letter must match the name of the advisor listed in the application. Multiple advisors may sign the single letter. The letter of recommendation should include the following information about the students':
1) progress toward completion of the project and probability of completion by March 1 of that year,
2) command of the subject matter,
3) communication skills, and
4) prior experience presenting the material to both technical and non-technical audiences.

THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION for the 2012 Posters on the Hill Session IS OCTOBER 18, 2011- no exceptions. For those selected to be presenters, as well as their advisors there will be a registration fee assessed to partially cover the expenses of breakfast, the evening reception or luncheon panel and facility/equipment rental.

This is a unique opportunity that we believe will have a very positive impact on the future of federal funding for undergraduate research. Students selected for participation will be notified in late January.

Funds are not available through CUR to support costs associated with student travel and lodging for the poster session. Students and their mentors should consider exploring a variety of sources of support, including their President's Office, Government Relations Office, academic dean, etc. While students may present their poster without mentor accompaniment, mentors are strongly encouraged to participate in the poster session.

A full day of activities is anticipated. In addition to the evening poster session and reception and luncheon panel, there will be field trip opportunities the day before, followed by an evening orientation session with a light dinner, and morning speaker session with a continental breakfast the day of the sessions. Students and their advisors will have an opportunity to visit their Congressional Representatives and Senators to talk about undergraduate research. CUR will provide instructions for setting up these meetings, but you should also consider contacting your institution's government relations officer as they might have contacts in the Congressional offices that you can utilize.

The primary selection criteria include:
• project quality, (e.g. timeliness, level of completion, and interest to both the scholarly and general communities),
• communication skills (e.g. being understandable by any educated person), and
• disciplinary and geographical distribution.
It is unlikely that more than one student project will be selected per school, but up to four students may be associated with a project.

2011-2012 Community Lecture Series

The Augustana Center for the Study of Ethics is pleased to announce the 2011-2012 Community Lecture Series. We bring this to your attention for two reasons: (1) one presentation of each lecture will be scheduled for on-campus; let me know if there is a particular course that you are teaching this year that might interface with one of the lectures, in which case we will schedule it for the term you are teaching the course, and (2) we encourage you to bring the lectures to the attention of groups and organizations of which you might be a part. Each participant agrees to present her or his lecture once on campus and up to three times off campus. The Center for the Study of Ethics pays the presentation stipends so that the lectures can be made available to community groups and organizations without cost.

2011-2012 Faculty Research Forum (FRF) Schedule

The FPF is a friendly, interdisciplinary working group of researchers and writers that meet two times a term to workshop works-in-progress (e.g., book chapters, grant proposals, conference papers, journal articles, book proposals, and other forms of scholarly production). Volunteers submit their work to the group, and then we gather over drinks and snacks to ask questions and provide constructive critiques--all in an effort to improve our research and writing.

In years past, the group has consisted of a good mix of people-from assistant to full professors in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. (People with sabbaticals or pre-tenure paid leaves often find the group especially valuable.) We ask only that members make a commitment to give and to receive feedback on works-in-progress. This typically means that each member presents a draft about once a year and attends the other meetings as regularly as possible.

The times for all meetings are 4:30 - 6:00 PM in the Dahl Room of the College Center. Dates for this year's FRF workshops are

A 1977 graduate of the college, Dr. Nolan first worked at Augustana in 1982, when he served for two years as resident director of Seminary Hall. He returned to Augustana in the 1990s, joining the faculty as an adjunct instructor of English and advisor to campus publications. He had served the college as both a teacher and administrator.
