Frequently we use our professional meeting allowance to attend our discipline based conventions, and there is little "extra" funding to allow us to consider teaching and learning in a conference setting. To address this need, we are trying something new this year. On Saturday, April 30 from 9:00 AM-4:00 PM, we will be hosting our first "Making Learning Visible" conference. Faculty from Augustana, Loras College and Eastern Iowa Community College will share practices that have helped improve learning in their classrooms. Strategies such as concept mapping, experiential learning and service learning will be discussed, as will teaching technologies such as Lecture Capture, Smartmusic, and Livescribe pens. Come and learn how blogs can provide usable program assessment or how we can take better advantage of international settings. The cost is only $25.00 to cover food expenses (no cost to presenters) so it's a reasonable way to expand your teaching repertoire and spend informal time in conversation with others interested in college learning. "Judaism: A Green Religion"
Presented by Sybil Sanchez, Director of the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life

Why is Judaism inherently a green religion? What is the Jewish stance on energy, climate change, public health, and biodiversity? Sybil Sanchez, a leader in coordinating efforts in the Jewish community and beyond to work towards environmental change, will provide an overview of the textual basis for Jewish environmentalism. Sanchez will discuss COEJL's ongoing policy work as well as other efforts to mobilize the Jewish community, including the Jewish Energy Covenant Campaign. An advocate for years on social-justice issues, Sybil has served as executive director of the Jewish Labor Committee and director of UN Affairs at B'nai B'rith International. She has a master's degree in international affairs from Columbia University.

Margaret Mook, associate professor of classical studies at Iowa State University, will speak on "The Archaeology of Archaic Cretan Houses." Her lecture is sponsored by the Archaelogical Institute of American.

The Archaic houses at Azoria, in eastern Crete, were built in the early 6th century BCE, and demonstrate construction of social space that remained architecturally unchanged in an urban center until the site's destruction in the early 5th century BCE. Individual house plans vary across the site, but all have basic elements in common: a kitchen, main hall, and storeroom.

The houses at Azoria contribute to our understanding of the form and function of the house in the Greek Aegean and the integration of domestic space in an urban context.

A classicist and archaeologist, Dr. Mook received her degrees from The College of Wooster (B.A. in Greek) and the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis (M.A. and Ph.D. in Classics). Her research interests are Late Bronze Age, Early Iron Age, and Archaic Greece, and since 1984 she has conducted archaeological fieldwork on Crete.

Alternative proposals (semesters and terms) for reducing faculty load to six courses along with attendant modifications in the curriculum will be discussed. Please join us.

Draft proposals will be circulated before the meeting. It is anticipated that a final proposal will be brought to the April 28th full-faculty meeting.

Dora Malech reads from her poetry. Dora, who served as an Iowa Writing Fellow at Augustana, earned her MFA in Poetry from the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop in 2005. She has been the recipient of a Frederick M. Clapp Poetry Writing Fellowship from Yale, a Truman Capote Fellowship and a Teaching-Writing Fellowship from the Writers' Workshop, a Glenn Schaeffer Poetry Award, a Writer's Fellowship at the Civitella Ranieri Center in Italy, and a 2010 Ruth Lilly Poetry Fellowship. The Waywiser Press published her first full-length collection of poems, Shore Ordered Ocean, in 2009 and the Cleveland State University Poetry Center published her second collection, Say So, in 2011. Her poems have appeared in numerous publications, including The New Yorker, Poetry, Best New Poets, American Letters & Commentary, Poetry London, and The Yale Review. She has taught writing at the University of Iowa; Victoria University's International Institute of Modern Letters in Wellington, New Zealand; Kirkwood Community College; Augustana College; and Saint Mary's College of California. The theme of this year's symposium is "Budget Deficits and Intergenerational Justice." The keynote address will be delivered by Robert Bixby, executive director of the Concord Coalition, a nation-wide non-partisan group advocating responsible fiscal policy. The Concord Coalition was founded in 1992 by the late former Senator Paul Tsongas (D-Mass), former Senator Warren Rudman (R-N.H.) and former U.S. Secretary of Commerce Peter Peterson. Mr. Bixby's address will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Augustana faculty and community leaders and time for discussion and conversation.

Sherry C. Maurer, director of the Augustana College Art Museum, will lead a gallery walk discussion of the Augustana exhibit at the Figge, "Celebrating Ideas: Bridging Communities with Augustana's Liberal Arts Through the AGES."

The tour will explore ideas and images ranging from the 15th-century expansion of information in the printed book to the 20th-century extension of world view with satellite images.

This is the second of four lectures by Augustana faculty in April at the Figge Art Museum.

The Figge cafe and bar will open at 5 p.m. and there will be live music for this "Thursdays at the Figge" event.

Commentary on the Olson-Brandelle North American Indian Art Collection and its related 2010 catalogue, for which Maurer served as principal editor, will be included.

"On the Trail of Galileo's Sunspots"

Presented by Tom Mayer

In summer 2010 Thomas Mayer spent three weeks in the UK and Ireland as part of his ongoing census of copies of Galileo's Sunspot Letters (1613). The book is important to his larger research project about Galileo's trial because the Roman Inquisition censored it before publication (not a normal practice) and made it the real cause of Galileo's troubles beginning in 1616. The Inquisition objected mainly to his attempt to use scripture in support of the Copernican theory that the earth moved around the sun, much less to the Copernican theory itself. The census indicates that although the book was never formally banned, it may nevertheless have been unofficially suppressed. The liberally illustrated talk will discuss some of the two dozen copies in British and Irish repositories and will offer a few observations about the highly interesting collecting history of the book.

Gary Paul Nabhan is an internationally-celebrated nature writer, seed saver, conservation biologist and sustainable agriculture activist who has been called "the father of the local food movement" by Mother Earth News. Gary is also an orchard-keeper, wild forager and Ecumenical Franciscan brother in his hometown of Patagonia, Arizona near the Mexican border.

He is the author or editor of twenty-four books and will be focusing his talk on his latest book, Food Diversity, Food Security and Climate Change. For his writing and collaborative conservation work, he has been honored with many awards, including a MacArthur "genius" award.

He works as most of the year as a research scientist at the Southwest Center of the University of Arizona, and the rest as co-founder-facilitator of several food and farming alliances, including Renewing America's Food Traditions and Flavors Without Borders.

The Celebration of Learning is a student research symposium that began in 1997, and is the result of hundreds of hours of collaborative work between students and faculty members. The annual event provides a venue through which students can display and share the results of Senior Inquiry, Summer Research, Honors Capstone, or other advanced research projects. The day will open with a Keynote Address, followed by a session of concurrent student presentations, a light lunch and student poster session, and a second session of concurrent student presentations. After the presentations, all participants and their families and friends are invited to the Augustana College Art Museum to view the Senior Studio Student Art Exhibit.

In celebration of Augustana's 150th anniversary, a rich and diverse historical overview of art works from the Augustana College art collection will be exhibited in "Celebrating Ideas: Bridging Communities with Liberal Arts through the AGES" at the Figge Art Museum in Davenport. All Augustana faculty, staff, administration and students are admitted into the museum FREE until the end of May. One hundred works of art from Augustana's Liberal Arts through the AGES collection, ancient through contemporary, are currently on display. Every Thursday night at 7:00 PM during the month of April there will be a talk and tour by an Augustana professor on the collection and the project. Each work of art is exhibited with a panel written by an Augustana student or member of the faculty/administration. Catalogs are provided free of charge until the supply runs out. The Registry is open to students and graduate schools in the fields of Anthropology/Archaeology, Arts/Humanities, Biology/Biochemistry, Business, Chemistry/Biochemistry, Economics, Education, Engineering, English and Linguistics, Environmental Studies, Geosciences, Health Professions, History, Journalism and Communications, Mathematics/Computer Science, Physics/ Astronomy, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work and Sociology.

Any undergraduate may go to to fill out a simple curriculum vitae form. There is no charge to the student or the student's institution and records will be made available to bona fide Graduate Schools that contract with CUR for this service.
