This presentation examines the consumption and production of Reggaetón, and its (re)articulation from the global market to its performance in the local spaces of Madrid's discotecas latinas. Ecuadorian migrants' weekend gatherings in these sites make the necessary spaces to affirm their place as citizens and as migrants in Madrid. Prof. Masterson will analyze the performance of Reggaetón and reactions to this genre in the discoteques through the experiences of Ecuadorian migrant women, and keep gender as a category of analysis when analyzing the social, cultural and political constructions of the Ecuadorian immigrant in Spain's public discourse. The presentation will follow a more informal format, exploring both Prof. Masterson's thoughts on the subject, and aspects of the research experience.

Kristy Nabhan-Warren is a regionally-elected representative of the American Academy of Religion and is hosting the Midwest AAR at Augustana Friday and Saturday, April 1 and 2, 2011. This year's conference theme is "Teaching Religion" and there are some great sessions planned. Kristy encourages faculty to attend Dr. Curtis' talk as well as any sessions that might interest you and your students. Nametags can be picked up at the registration tables in Evald which is where the sessions all take place. Kristy will waive the conference registration fee if you decide to come. If you would like to attend the luncheon scheduled for 12:30 - 1:30 PM in the College Center Loft, it will cost $10.00. A program can be read HERE.

White Privilege Summit 2011 is a community event to discuss race, privilege, inequality and the fight for social justice. It provides an opportunity for critical discussions about diversity, multicultural education and leadership, social justice, race, gender, class, sexual orientation, environment, health, religion and systems of privilege/oppression. The summit serves an as opportunity to examine and explore difficult issues related to white privilege, white supremacy and oppression. This summit is not about making white people feel guilty. The summit is about critically examining the society in which we live and working to dismantle systems of power, prejudice and inequality. The summit is a challenging, empowering and educational experience. The keynote, workshops and small-group reflections will inform, engage and challenge participants, while providing practical tips and strategies to gain for social justice. Morris Dees joins us as our keynote speaker for the Augustana's second White Privilege Summit. In 1994, Morris Dees warned the U.S. attorney that radical militias were planning domestic terror strikes. Six months later, the Oklahoma City Bombing was tied to one such group.

As founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center, Dees uses the law in his battle against prejudice and hatred. In the 1980s and '90s, he worked against the K.K.K. and neo-Nazi groups with a series of historic lawsuits. Today, Dees focuses his attention on anti-government militias. In his expose, Gathering Storm: America's Militia Threat, Dees explains the dangers these groups represent. He is also author of A Lawyer's Journey, an autobiography, and Hate on Trial: The Case Against America's Most Dangerous Neo-Nazi. Dees was also the subject of the television move Line of Fire and portrayed in the feature film Ghosts of the Mississippi.

The sole purpose of the Harold T. and Violet M. Jaeke Endowment is to recognize outstanding performance by members of the faculty and staff of Augustana College as reflected in personal leadership contributions that benefit students and the common life of the institution. The endowment provides for annual awards that will recognize and honor individuals who in the judgment of the selection committee reflect exceptional qualifications of this nature.

Nominations must be received in the Academic Affairs Office, 116 Founders Hall, no later than 4:00 PM on Thursday, March 31, 2011. Please hand deliver your nomination if the deadline is near. So that the selection committee can fully and fairly consider each nominee, they ask that you complete the nomination form--letters of nomination will not be reviewed. The committee also will not consider group/collaborative nominations (one nomination form with multiple signatures). Each recommendation requires a separate nomination form. The theme of this year's symposium is "Budget Deficits and Intergenerational Justice." The keynote address will be delivered by Robert Bixby, executive director of the Concord Coalition, a nation-wide non-partisan group advocating responsible fiscal policy. The Concord Coalition was founded in 1992 by the late former Senator Paul Tsongas (D-Mass), former Senator Warren Rudman (R-N.H.) and former U.S. Secretary of Commerce Peter Peterson. Mr. Bixby's address will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Augustana faculty and community leaders and time for discussion and conversation.

The Celebration of Learning is a student research symposium that began in 1997, and is the result of hundreds of hours of collaborative work between students and faculty members. The annual event provides a venue through which students can display and share the results of Senior Inquiry, Summer Research, Honors Capstone, or other advanced research projects. The day will open with a Keynote Address, followed by a session of concurrent student presentations, a light lunch and student poster session, and a second session of concurrent student presentations. After the presentations, all participants and their families and friends are invited to the Augustana College Art Museum to view the Senior Studio Student Art Exhibit.

On Thursday, May 12, academic affairs will host a late-afternoon reception in the library for Augustana's faculty and board of trustees. This will be the second opportunity this academic year to update your record of achievements.

The library needs your scholarship published, performed or exhibited from August 31, 2010 through April 1, 2011-including books, journal articles, grants, SoTL articles, music compositions, plays, photos of works of art, papers or presentations at conferences. (Scholarship published, performed or exhibited after April 1 will be included in the next year's celebration.)

The deadline for submissions is Monday, May 2, 2011.

Work previously submitted to the library will be included-you need not send it again.

Frequently we use our professional meeting allowance to attend our discipline based conventions, and there is little "extra" funding to allow us to consider teaching and learning in a conference setting. To address this need, we are trying something new this year. On Saturday, April 30 from 9:00 AM-4:00 PM, we will be hosting our first "Making Learning Visible" conference. Faculty from Augustana, Loras College and Eastern Iowa Community College will share practices that have helped improve learning in their classrooms. Strategies such as concept mapping, experiential learning and service learning will be discussed, as will teaching technologies such as Lecture Capture, Smartmusic, and Livescribe pens. Come and learn how blogs can provide usable program assessment or how we can take better advantage of international settings. The cost is only $25.00 to cover food expenses (no cost to presenters) so it's a reasonable way to expand your teaching repertoire and spend informal time in conversation with others interested in college learning. This seminar will consider the material aspects of the energy problem alongside ethical questions and historical overviews. What will new energy sources look like and how will they be allocated? What by-products and long-term environmental consequences will result from these new technologies? As materials grow scarce, should some people or purposes be considered more worthy of resources than others? How does one prioritize energy usage across borders? We will consider the economic and political stakes of energy policy, and consider how an issue that affects the whole earth can or should be managed by national governments and international corporations.

This seminar will include talks by Heidi Levin (University of Chicago Energy Initiative) with Robert Rosner (Astronomy and Astrophysics), Travis Bradford (Business Management), David Archer (Geophysical Sciences) and Elizabeth Moyer (Geophysical Sciences).
