Kit McGurn, National Arctic Organizer for the Sierra Club, travels the country working to educate and engage citizens in Arctic conservation issues. The Arctic ecosystem on the North Slope of Alaska represents a microcosm of the realities that society at large faces with regard to fossil fuel dependency, climate change and the importance of protecting our last wild and pristine places.

Join one-hundred and thirty excited Rock Island Primary Academy elementary students as they watch Augustana Black Student Union members perform a 20-minute play entitled "The Drinking Gourd."  The Drinking Gourd play illustrates the story of slaves' use of the Big Dipper (known as the drinking gourd) to locate the North star which would lead them North to freedom, along the Underground Railroad. These Augustana students have worked for weeks to organize and prepare the show for these local 3rd and 4th graders. The Augie students are to be commended for participating in this service learning project which encourages and promotes a multicultural environment and benefits not only Augustana students but also community elementary students as well.

Planning for the future of AGES

This is the first in what the Gen Ed Committee expects to be a series of conversations on the future of the AGES curriculum.  We'll look briefly at the assessment data that led us to implement the AGES program, and at what we know about the successes and challenges of the program thus far.  As we know, the AGES program we planned for in 2000 is not the AGES program that exists in 2010...and the curriculum we have in 2020 will likely look different still.  What direction should we pursue in regards to general education?

Kerry Trask is professor of history emeritus with the University of Wisconsin Colleges and taught at University of Wisconsin-Manitowoc from 1972 until his retirement in 2008. He earned his Ph.D. and M.A. in history at the University of Minnesota and his B.A. from Hamline University. A native of Canada, he has a particular interest in the early history and development of the Great Lakes region and has taught courses and published numerous articles on that subject. Trask is the author of three books. His most recent is Black Hawk: The Battle for the Heart of America  (Holt) which was awarded the  Benjamin F. Shambaugh Award by the State Historical Society of Iowa and was recognized for "Outstanding Achievement" by the Wisconsin Library Association. Dr. Trask was made a Fellow of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters in 2008. Currently, he is a candidate for the Wisconsin State Assembly.

Midwest Faculty Seminar Presents:
Global Capitalisms: Old and New

Midwest Faculty Seminar is pleased to announce their third seminar of the 2009-2010 academic year.  This seminar will examine capitalism in a variety of forms, and will discuss the ways in which these forms can be conceptualized. Confirmed speakers include Moishe Postone (History & Jewish Studies), Dali Yang (Political Science & East Asian Studies), Ralph Austen (African History), Paul Cheney (History), and Fredrik Albritton Jonsson (History). "What are we doing here?" 

Ever get that question from your students?  Do you have a good answer? 

Figuring out what we are doing, how we are trying to do it, and if it is working is important to all of us.  How do we figure that all out?  It starts with asking the question.

Each year, the Dean's Office and the Assessment Committee try to find ways to be helpful concerning these questions-and encourages you to come to your own answers.  We'd like to do that again.

We make the following offer to all departments trying to answer these questions (and others).  You are invited to a Departmental Workshop day on March 5th (the Friday before the start of Spring term).  We will provide coffee and donuts (and maybe something healthy) in the morning and will provide lunch to all departments that commit to gathering that day to explore these questions.  Members of the Assessment Committee will be available to offer suggestions and help if you get stuck.  We will also provide materials to help "prime the pump."   If your department has had difficulty finding time or motivation to do assessment work this year, then this workshop is for you.

It is preferred that the proposal come from both student and faculty, however, proposals from faculty members will be considered if the student has not been selected yet. Proposals do not have to be lengthy, 1-2 pages will suffice. Submit proposals electronically to
