Greetings from the Center for Teaching & Learning.

Now that we've had our first hard freeze of the season, there is no doubt that fall is here! Great time to be inside with a good book, eh?

If you're an avid reader of the ACTL section of the Faculty Newsletter then you know that there is great interest on the part of the faculty in "incorporating active learning strategies" in the classroom, as reported on the needs assessment survey. In response, planning has begun on workshops that will be offered beginning in winter term. If you have an active learning technique that you have used and would like to share with your colleagues, it's not too late to get involved; please let me know.

There were two other suggestions from the survey that caught my attention:

There are two resources already in place that I think you will find useful. First, a large collection of "generic" teaching and learning resources have been identified, collected and set aside in the Tredway Library for your use. The Teaching Collection is available for two-week checkout, only to faculty. A list of the collection is available on our moodle site, or directly at I have also asked that the Librarians be on the lookout for discipline specific resources; I'm sure that they will share what they find, but don't hesitate to ask. (You know how helpful the Librarians are!)

The other resource you might find useful is the ACTL moodle site itself. This site was started by Mike Green as a handy repository of all sorts of teaching & learning resources. Currently there are twenty seven different categories offering resources on a broad spectrum of teaching & learning issues. With either of these, the Teaching Collection or the moodle site, we are always looking for suggestions of useful resources. Please let us know!

I hope you have an enjoyable and productive week 8.

P. S. While the books for the reading group have been ordered, as of this writing, I'm still waiting for Bob to deliver them. I expect they'll arrive soon.
