Wabash Study

We have had a tremendous response from the spring Liberal Studies faculty to our request for help with the Wabash National Study of Liberal-Arts Education.

Twenty-six of 27 faculty members (96.2%) have offered us class time to administer the Wabash Study instruments. Their willingness to share a class hour will allow us to collect data from the 400 Augustana students participating in the Study. This term we will visit classes to administer the ACT CAAP Critical-Thinking and the Defining Issues II tests and the faculty will help by distributing surveys and other assessment instruments.

We thank the LS faculty for its support of this high-priority assessment project. The Wabash Study is the most comprehensive examination we know of how students develop during their four years of college, using direct measures of student growth in seven areas. A report we will receive next fall will include a voluminous dataset detailing first-year students' development during the current academic year, with comparative data from over 500 schools. We will learn about the impact of both LS and our co- and extracurricular activities. Longer term, the Study will examine first-year to senior growth for the same cohort. This rich source of data will provide perspectives with powerful implications for our curriculum and educational practices.

Teagle Study

As we finish the first year of the Wabash Study, we are completing the Teagle Value-Added Study, which will offer us the most precise measurement of the impact of AGES to date. This June, faculty from all six Teagle schools will read representative samples of student papers to assess writing quality and critical thinking. Because we assessed papers from this year's seniors when they were first-year students, we can determine how much students' writing has improved over their four years with us. Thank you in advance to Jon Clauss, Dave Crowe, Ellen Hay, Mike Schroeder, and Molly Todd, who will serve as Augustana's readers.

Please help as well by sharing papers. If you have a class that has a good number of seniors and are assigning an argumentative, case-building paper, would you please write to Michael Nolan to let him know. We are seeking a representative sample of papers written late in the senior year, and so this is the exemplary time to collect them. Nolan will provide more detail and the inevitable, but brief, paperwork by separate email.
