ACTL Session
Film and Discussion:  "Talking 9 to 5 - Men and Women in the Workplace"
(see announcements for session description)
Old Main 3:30 - 4:30 PM

This film showing and discussion of Deborah Tannen's film "Talking 9 to 5: Men and Women in the Workplace"  is a follow-up to an earlier ACTL session that explored the ways in which students interact with women faculty members versus men faculty members in the classroom.    The film addresses a larger topic on how men and women communicate differently and how this might impact the classroom.

Deborah Tannen, well known Georgetown linguistics professor, has popularized linguistics research through several best-seller books identifying conversational patterns of women and men. Typically, there are conversational differences that we're all used to, but may misunderstand. The film, "Talking 9 to 5," summarizes key points from her book of the same title. The video documents workplace conversations in several large corporations. It includes scenes demonstrating common female and male patterns in giving instructions, listening to others, making small talk, and offering evaluative feedback. Tannen's work offers insight into common gender differences in everyday communication and is useful to anyone who talks with the "opposite sex."  We hope you can join us on Thursday, April 16 at 4:30 p.m. in Old main 330 for a showing and discussion of this film.
